Beignet time

This is Abby's beignet bought in New Orleans, trouble was she was wearing black shorts and the powdered sugar knows what to do with that color.

Lunch at Caspers - Cherokee of Egan - Est 1971 Pot roast sandwiches, let me describe it. Chunks of tender roast beef placed upon a bun that has a mound of mashed potatoes carmelized onions then the beef on top of this is a lace of onion straws, along the side is a portion of gravy. Shirleen had the slider version, I the sandwich. Roger had a bowl of their Prime Rib and Vegtable soup, looked great. They serve fresh crunchy bread before the meal. This restaurant to visit for dinner. Find it at casperscherokee.com.

Misc restaurants

Foods St Louis trip

Chester’s Kitchen and Bar, Rochester, poor service. I started the meal by ordering a flat bread Lavash Margaretta appetizer. Shirleen’s Filet was great, my parmesan walleye was flat tasting, but had good garlic – Asiago cheese mashed potatoes. Mary Ann had a deep fried walleye sandwich, looked and tasted good and Steve had  a salmon delete the sauce, don’t bring the green beans and potatoes. Well they brought it as the menu stated and he returned it and got the same without the sauce, not exactly as ordered but gave up as we were all done with ours. Then the check, he noticed both dinners went on my card and then the manager was summoned, they deleted Steve’s meal and straightened out the billing that charged me for the substitute of fries. Don’t think we will ever visit this place again.

After an eventful ride to Iowa City at 1030pm, finding out the hotel had overbooked the room and now what?? We ended up staying at it after they called a no show and he said rent it. They gave a discount price which I am sure was the over 60 rate anyhow. Received a questionar about the stay, will settle down and write it. No breakfast.

Four Corners, Hwy 218/92 south of Coralville was where we ate breakfast.

Lewis and Clark’s restaurant in St. Charles was recommended by a couple walking down the street who frequents it when in town. Three stories tall sitting in downtown Historic Old Town. The deep fired California onion rings were nicely arranged small sliced lightly breaded accompanied by a mild Jalapenos ketchup sauce and easy to eat appetizer. As we overlooked the park area below we sipped a glass of Clos  Du Bois cabernet ($8.25), Shirleen’s House salad was just fine and my Chicken Quesadilla was medium, not the crispy outside I remember at other places.

Cyprus Lounge, Embassy Suites Convention Center restaurant. Noon lunch, with a Bud because of the high heat and hot asphalt where the cars were shown. Shirleen had a hamburger with cheddar cheese and bacon, lettuce and tomato slice, I even thought it was deliciously fried and prepared. You should have seen the size of it. I had the Crab Cake Spinach Salad with house vinegrate. Real tasty but the cake was bland and mealy, don’t order these unless in a crab cake area. Would go back for more food – good.

Vivians Vineyards, 1409 N 2nd St, St. Charles MO. A real eclectic restaurant. They have a baked portabella mushroom, face down on a bed of cream cheese covered with asiago cheese and baked, three sizes. Shirleen had a           I had a sirloin steak covered with fried onions and a hot chipotle sauce. To finish the meal we had a small spoonful of sherbet and a shot of champagne on it.

Grappa Grill, 1664 Country Club Plaza, St Charles MO hard to find when the GPS set us wrong. I had asked if they could do a half order of Hand-breaded fried green olives served with marinara sauce, but she could not accommodate. We had a nice dinner, good slightly sweet firm rolls to accompany the CHICKEN SPINACH STRAWBERRY SALAD, Grilled chicken, tomatoes, strawberries, mozzarella cheese and candied almonds. I had THE TUSCANY a Blackened chicken, Andouille sausage, crab meat, shrimp, tomatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli, green onions and bowtie noodles in a Cajun Alfredo sauce 13.49 but tonight 9.99. I opted for the Spring salad, nice presentation. Had a glass of Blackstone merlot, had somewhere b4 not bad. Decent but not over the top restaurant, go across the rivers to The Hill for Italian food, Consetta’s. Would visit again.

Champagne’s, 315 E Main St, West Branch Iowa, home of Herbert Hoover. What a delightful experience, a Cajun restaurant in the middle of Iowa. It turns out the lady who owns the restaurant was flooded out with hurricane Ivan and then Katrina. Her brother lived in Iowa City and said he would bankroll them in a 10 seat restaurant, which ahs grown to a increased seating and banquet room for hundreds of tour buses. The shrimp robe Shirleen had was to her taste, my Crawfish Etouffeé was heavily spiced and just downright good. The owner’s husband came in and grabbed a quick couple snorts of tequila. I would surely visit this place again. And to think we almost ate at a Pizza joint but an obnoxious bar patron drove us out.

Ronneburg Restaurant, Amana Iowa. They offer for $9.50 a family style breakfast, need to try sometime. People next to us had it and the pancake was larger than the plate and looked really nicely done, not thick and puffy. We opted for eggs and bacon with there delicious pan fried thinly sliced raw fries. The waitress said they have 3 pans cooking at all times. I had a ham and cheese omelet with the potatoes. Next time I would order a side of grilled ham, this had the regular thin sliced ham. Worthy of a stop at any time.

Ret Iowa City ‘The Mill’ restaurant downtown, not a show stopper but a bar to eat at. 120 E Burlington. Hamburgers and a pretty full fare. The french fries come sprinkled with salt and pepper.

Shirleen and I were in LaCrosse a couple weeks ago. Found this restaurant downtown; knowing you are doing the suburban run, here is my info:
The Freighthouse Rest; on 107 Vine St  : http://www.freighthouserestaurant.com/
It has two big parking lots. Outside patio, big inside bar area. I had halibut with drawn butter - simply delicious; Shirleen had a filet, soft and tender; house Cabernet was shitty out of a box but Shirleen said the cheapest other wine was 17$ a glass.

Thanksgiving and more

This trip started out with two cars headed east. First stop Rochester, at the Honkers Restaurant, across from St. Mary's hospital. Got there a little late for breakfast so lunch was in order. Among the meals were wrap's; quesadillas;  fresh breaded chicken strips – this was probably the best of the meals, would try them or fish next; a hamburger with fresh sour cream, cream cheese and jalapeño peppers, good flavor but over done hamburger;

We arrived in Brookfield and went to dinner at 7. We will try a new place tonight. An Italian restaurant – Louise's (http://www.louiseswisconsin.com/) - in a building with a couple other businesses. You walk into it and have before you the bar. We were set to the left with viewing to the chef's area and open hearth oven. With the drinks came slices of thick crust pizza with some herbs on them, dipping sauce – olive oil and olive oil with balsamic vinegar – plenty for all and more to come. All pasta made in house, A nice menu, a pepperoni pizza - Louise's original pizza - original pizza is made by hand in the Neapolitan style with a medium thin crust  using 100% natural whole milk mozzarella, sauce is made fresh daily from whole Italian pear tomatoes, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil.  with fresh mozzarella cheese; a large piece of lasagna, traditional meat lasagna from Bologna, Italy fresh pasta, Ricotta, Mozzarella and Parmigiano cheeses, pappardelle (wide noodle) with Italian sausage, plum tomatoes and fresh garlic in a tomato cream sauce – great sauce; Calzone pizza dough folded and stuffed with cheeses and other fillings, then baked in a pizza ovens. filled with Mozzarella, Ricotta and Parmesan and one with pepperoni; TORTELLONI VEGETALI handmade Tortelloni filled with fresh seasonal vegetables, Mascarpone, Ricotta and Parmigiano cheese. Served with fresh sautéed spinach and a Parmesan sauce
TRADITIONAL PASTA Our imported traditional pasta is made with Semolina flour and water. The pasta is completely eggless. Good spaghetti and great tasting homemade meatballs;

For Michelle's birthday we went to the Milwaukee Steakhouse on Blue Mound in Brookfield a year old restaurant opened by the chef at Coerper's 5 o'clock restaurant. This one was not in the hood, where Leonard sat in his van and watched your car so it would be there till you returned, not a safe place. It was bought out and about 8 employees have relocated and business looked good.
http://www.brewskissteakhouse.com/homesteakhouse.html
 to start off with we got a loaf of sour dough bread and honey, each a big slab of butter, to start out we ordered French fried onion rings, thick cut, fried just right – moist and tender inside. Accompanying the meal was a relish tray of a couple green onions, three types of peppers, pickle, and a fresh garden tossed salad. The steaks ordered were prime rib, bone-in rib eye and a large 16 ounce filet mignon split for two, potato baked and one rice pilaf, and relish tray. We asked how they got the charred outside to the steaks – a liquid flavoring – cinged to char by a 1,300 degree heat.
To follow was a Alexander, ice cream with mint and drizzled chocolate, but before that she brought out a slice of caramel apple pie with whipped cream.

 Friday night we ate at     what a night. we exited after 2 and a half hours. Waited for everything but the check. That they were fast at.
